50 Malaysian Ringgit banknote (3rd series)

£6.316928

1 MYR = £0.126339

The 50 Malaysian Ringgit banknote from Malaysia’s third series reflects the country’s shift towards more modern, security-focused banknote design while continuing long-standing national themes. Issued by Bank Negara Malaysia, this series is still familiar to many travellers but is increasingly presented for exchange as designs and security features have evolved.

On the front of the note, the dominant feature is the finely engraved portrait of Malaysia’s first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Rahman, shown wearing traditional royal attire and ceremonial headgear. The portrait is set against a layered background of geometric security patterns, micro-printing, and soft colour transitions. The denomination “50” appears prominently in Arabic numerals and as “LIMA PULUH RINGGIT” in Malay. Additional security elements visible on the front include a clear watermark area, fine guilloché linework, serial numbering in contrasting colours, and a vertical security strip integrated into the paper.

The reverse of the 50 Ringgit third series banknote focuses on Malaysia’s industrial and economic development. The central vignette depicts an offshore oil platform rising from the sea, symbolising the country’s energy sector and natural resources. Surrounding this scene are intricate background patterns, marine motifs, and floral elements that echo Malaysia’s natural environment. The denomination is repeated clearly, with “RM 50” positioned alongside decorative borders and latent design features that change appearance under different lighting conditions.

As later Malaysian banknote series have been introduced, earlier third-series notes are increasingly set aside, particularly by banks and travel money bureau, which often no longer handle older issues. These notes are still widely submitted for specialist exchange services rather than spent.
