50 Ringgit Ringgit (Issued 2009)

Issued in 2009 as part of a commemorative special issue series by Bank Negara Malaysia, the 50 Ringgit note occupies a prominent position within the Malaysian banknote family, sitting above the 20 Ringgit and below the 100 Ringgit in the denomination hierarchy. This special issue shares the broad design language of the standard Malaysian ringgit series while incorporating distinctive commemorative characteristics that set it apart from regular circulation notes. The teal and blue colour palette, along with the consistent use of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong portrait, provides continuity across the series, whilst the special issue status gives this particular 50 Ringgit note its own identity within the family.

On the front, the dominant feature is the formal portrait of Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, rendered in fine intaglio engraving and positioned to the right of centre. He is depicted wearing traditional royal regalia including a decorated songkok headpiece, and the portrait is produced with considerable tonal depth, capturing fine detail in the facial features and ceremonial attire. The background behind the portrait is printed in a deep teal green with an intricate geometric and guilloché pattern, overlaid with a repeating motif of stylised floral forms that provide an ornate screen effect. To the left of centre, the bold numeral “50” is printed in a large format in dark blue ink, accompanied by a vivid red hibiscus flower — the national flower of Malaysia — rendered in full colour with green stem and leaves, adding a striking natural element to the composition. Above the hibiscus sits a circular holographic or optically variable security device, which shifts in colour and pattern when tilted under light. At the very top of the note, the issuing authority “BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA” is printed in clear dark typography against the lighter blue ground. The denomination text “RINGGIT MALAYSIA” appears along the lower right edge, and the Jawi script equivalent is visible alongside the Roman text. A governor’s signature appears beneath the numeral “50” with the title “GABENOR” printed beneath it, alongside the Malay-language legal tender declaration “WANG KERTAS INI SAH DIPERLAKUKAN DENGAN NILAI.” In the upper left area, a traditional diamond-shaped floral ornamental motif in gold and white is visible, consistent with the decorative vocabulary used across the Malaysian ringgit series. A vertical security strip is embedded within the paper and is visible running through the body of the note, while the right-hand border features a repeating pattern of stylised blue floral rosettes arranged in a vertical column, framed by a dark decorative edge band.

The reverse presents a scene rendered in blue-grey intaglio engraving depicting an oil palm plantation, with tall, heavily laden oil palm trees rising prominently on the left side of the central vignette, their distinctive clustered fruit bunches clearly visible at the base of the fronds. To the right within the same vignette, a figure dressed in traditional ceremonial attire appears to be performing a formal gesture or ceremony, adding a cultural and human element to the agricultural imagery. Between the two figures, a stylised molecular or scientific diagram is depicted, composed of spheres and connecting rods, representing Malaysia’s scientific and industrial progress. The central vignette is framed within a rectangular engraved border, and below it the denomination “RM 50” is printed in bold dark numerals. The serial number “AF9919140” appears twice on the reverse — once horizontally across the upper left area and again vertically along the right-hand margin — printed in dark blue. To the upper left of the note, a small security emblem within a rectangular frame is visible, depicting what appears to be a tiger motif consistent with the Malaysian coat of arms symbolism. In the upper right corner, the familiar diamond-shaped floral ornament appears again in gold and blue, matching the front design element, and the text “بڠك نڬارا مليسيا” in Jawi script is printed in the upper centre of the reverse. Along the right-hand edge, vertical Jawi text reading “رينڬيت مليسيا” is printed, completing the bilingual denomination designation. The overall paper ground of the reverse is a pale blue-white, lending clarity to the engraved imagery and keeping the note consistent with the standard series aesthetic.
