The fifty-sen coin is the highest sen denomination of the Malaysian ringgit, from the country’s second coinage series that combines the national flower with traditional cultural motifs. It was struck in cupro-nickel with a bright silvery finish and a substantial feel, in a round format, and this series carried a security inscription along the edge.

On the obverse is the hibiscus, Malaysia’s national flower, shown as a bloom with leaves above the value. “BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA” curves around the rim, with the large numeral “50”, the date and “SEN” below.

On the reverse is a wau bulan, the ornate Malay moon-kite, shown as a symmetrical decorated form with heart and star patterns and a slender upright ornament, one of the cultural emblems featured in the series.
