500 Malaysian Ringgit (2nd series)

£63.169275

1 MYR = £0.126339

The 500 Malaysian Ringgit banknote from Malaysia’s second series represents the highest denomination issued for general circulation during this period and reflects the country’s economic confidence and strong national symbolism. Issued by Bank Negara Malaysia, this note is now withdrawn from circulation and is no longer accepted by banks or travel money bureau, but it remains historically significant and highly recognisable.

The front of the banknote features a finely engraved portrait of Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, wearing traditional royal attire. The portrait is framed by dense guilloché patterns and ornamental motifs typical of high-value security printing. The denomination “LIMA RATUS RINGGIT” is prominently displayed in bold lettering at the centre, with the numeral “500” repeated in the corners. Intricate line work, layered background patterns, and official signatures reinforce the authority of Bank Negara Malaysia and showcase the craftsmanship of late-20th-century banknote design.

The reverse of the note depicts the Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur, one of Malaysia’s most iconic historic landmarks. The building’s distinctive Moorish-inspired architecture, domes, and clock tower are rendered in detailed intaglio engraving, set against an ornate patterned background. Decorative floral elements and repeating security designs surround the central vignette, while the denomination “500” is clearly shown in multiple positions to ensure instant recognition.

As part of the second series, this 500 Ringgit note was eventually withdrawn as Malaysia modernised its currency system and reduced the use of very high-denomination notes. Today, these banknotes are primarily encountered when clearing old collections, business holdings, or inherited foreign currency.
