50 Rufiyaa (Issued 2015)

The 2015 issue of the 50 Rufiyaa marks the introduction of the Maldives Monetary Authority’s polymer banknote series, a landmark transition in the nation’s currency history that reflected both modernisation and a renewed commitment to security and durability in the Indian Ocean archipelago’s financial infrastructure. Printed on polymer substrate rather than traditional cotton paper, the series represented a significant technological step forward for Maldivian currency at the time of issue. The note carries dual dating, referencing both the Gregorian year 2015 and the Islamic calendar equivalent of 1436, reflecting the Maldives’ dual cultural and religious heritage.

On the front, the note is dominated by a rich composition rendered in teal, green, and aquamarine tones across the polymer surface, with subtle background guilloché patterning visible across the entire field. To the right, a large, detailed vignette depicts a figure — rendered in a photographic or finely printed illustrative style — seated and reading from an open Quran, shown in close detail with the holy text clearly open before them; this image occupies the central-right portion of the note and is executed with considerable tonal depth. Behind this central figure, a secondary scene depicts a group of figures in what appears to be a traditional Maldivian communal activity, rendered in a lighter, more distant style suggestive of historical or cultural ceremony. To the left, a prominent circular security element in deep blue features an intricate interlocking geometric pattern, functioning as the note’s primary optical security device, visible against the lighter ground of the polymer. Above this circle, text in Dhivehi script identifies the issuing authority, with the name of the Maldives Monetary Authority rendered in flowing Thaana script beneath. The serial number A214820 appears in green numerals in the lower-centre area, and the date inscription reads 1436 — 22 — 2015 along the lower portion of the note. The denomination numeral 50 appears prominently in the upper-left corner and again in the lower-right, both in teal and rendered in bold typography. A vertical strip of numerals reading 2, 1, 4, 8, 2, 0 runs along the right-hand edge of the note, forming part of the serial reference. The lower margin carries further Dhivehi script text identifying the issuing authority and confirming the note’s official status.

The reverse presents a cool, predominantly teal and green composition with the dominant central image being a tall, cylindrical tower depicted in a multi-tiered, modernist architectural style; this structure, identifiable as the Maldives’ Islamic Centre minaret in Malé — one of the most recognisable landmarks in the Maldivian capital — rises from the lower centre of the note with each tier clearly delineated through horizontal banding and architectural detailing rendered in fine line work. The tower is shown against a softly graduated background that transitions from pale aquamarine at the upper registers to a deeper teal towards the base. At the top of the reverse, the same circular blue security motif seen on the front appears again, this time positioned centrally above the tower, providing a visual anchor and serving as a windowed transparent security element characteristic of polymer note production. To the right of this circle, the denomination is stated clearly: “50 / FIFTY / RUFIYAA” in bold, clean typography, followed immediately below by “MALDIVES MONETARY AUTHORITY” in block capitals. Along the left vertical edge, the text “05 OCTOBER” is printed in small red upright lettering, referencing a significant national date. In the lower left, the denomination numeral 50 is repeated in red, and along the very bottom edge the word “MALDIVES” is printed in large spaced capital letters in a teal-green tone. A latent image or colour-shifting element is visible in the lower-central area of the tower vignette, and the polymer substrate allows faint ghost imagery from the front design to show through where the note has not been opacified.
