1 Cent (Issued 1977)

The 1 cent coin was part of the decimal coinage Malta adopted after moving away from the old pound, shilling and pence system, with 100 cents to the Maltese lira. Struck in bronze, it has a warm reddish-brown colour and the solid feel of a copper-based coin, and it circulated as one of the lowest denominations for everyday purchases. The piece is round with a plain edge.

On the obverse, the name “MALTA” arcs across the top above the George Cross, the emblem awarded to the island for gallantry, shown with its central roundel. Small stylised creatures are set around the field to either side, the year “1977” appears at the foot, and a beaded border frames the design.

On the reverse, a large numeral “1” stands at the centre above the word “CENT”, encircled by a graceful wreath of trailing ivy leaves that runs around the inner edge of the coin.
