The one lira coin was the highest circulating denomination of the Maltese lira, the currency of Malta before the country adopted the euro. Struck in cupro-nickel with a bright silver colour and a milled edge, it was a large, weighty coin, its bird design part of the flora-and-fauna series that ran through Malta’s decimal coinage.

On the obverse, the name “MALTA” arcs across the top above the national coat of arms: a shield showing the Maltese cross on a white field beside vertical bars, ensigned with a mural crown of fortifications and flanked by an olive branch and a palm frond, with a motto ribbon below. The date “1994” appears at the foot, all within a beaded border.

On the reverse stands a blue rock thrush, Malta’s national bird, perched on a rocky outcrop with food in its beak. The denomination “Lm1” is inscribed in the upper right field, and a beaded border frames the design within the raised rim.
