10 Cents Malta (large type) (Issued 1986)

The 10 cent coin was part of the second decimal series of the Maltese Lira, introduced from 1986 while Malta used the Lira and its cents. Struck in cupro-nickel, it was a familiar everyday denomination with a firm, chunky feel. The series remained in everyday use until Malta adopted the euro on 1 January 2008, after which the Lira coinage was withdrawn from circulation. It has a plain edge.

On the obverse, the coin carries the emblem of Malta used at the time — a shield showing a stylised Maltese coastal scene, with a traditional Maltese boat (dgħajsa) upon wavy lines of the sea beneath a rising sun, all enclosed within a border. The inscription “REPUBBLIKA TA’ MALTA” runs around the rim with the date 1986 at the foot, framed by a beaded border.

On the reverse appears a fish, its body curving across the field, with the numeral and denomination “10c” to one side and a beaded border framing the design within the raised rim.
