2 Mils, Malta (Issued 1972)

The 2 mils coin was one of the smallest denominations of Malta’s decimal currency, introduced with the mil-based system in which one thousand mils made up one Maltese lira. Struck in aluminium with a light silvery colour and a distinctive wavy, scalloped outline, it was a tiny, very light coin used for the lowest-value everyday transactions.

On the obverse, the name “MALTA” arcs across the upper field around a large Maltese cross at the centre, with small seahorse ornaments in the side fields and the date inscribed at the foot. The scalloped rim gives the design its characteristic flower-like frame.

On the reverse, the large numeral “2” fills the centre above the word “MILS”, encircled by a wreath of vine and ivy leaves that follows the scalloped edge of the coin.
