20 Liri Pound / Lira (Issued 1967)
The paper of this twenty lira note displays a warm peachy-beige tone throughout, with the texture and finish characteristic of currency production from the late 1960s. The surface shows the slight translucency typical of banknote stock from this era, and the overall condition suggests careful handling over decades of circulation. The dimensions and proportions are consistent with Maltese currency standards, with denomination numerals positioned prominently in all four corners. The note’s colour palette—dominated by rust-red, burgundy, and tan tones—reflects the printing conventions of mid-twentieth-century Mediterranean banking design.
On the front, the banknote features a prominent male portrait positioned to the right side of the composition, rendered in fine engraving with precise line work defining facial features, spectacles, and hair texture. The portrait is accompanied by the inscription “AGATHA” beneath it. The left margin contains an ornate decorative panel with geometric guilloché patterning in red and cream tones, creating a vertical security element. At the top, “Banh Centrali ta’ Malta” appears in burgundy lettering, with the denomination “20” displayed prominently in the upper right corner in matching red. The central area features an engraved sailing vessel set against a subtle cloud backdrop, with the text “Din il-karta tal-fija hjja valuta legali ghal” and below that “GHOXRIN LIRA” in green-tinted lettering. Additional smaller text reads “L’Malta u mahruga bi-ewwerta ta’ l-ACE u l-1997 tal-Bank Centrali ta’ Malta.” The serial number “D 145942” appears in the upper left with check digit notation, repeated in the lower left. Fine horizontal line patterns fill the background, providing additional security through intricate engraving.
The reverse displays a substantial architectural structure—a three-storey government or civic building rendered in warm ochre and coral tones with regularly spaced arched windows across its facade. To the right of the building stands an equestrian monument sculpture, depicted in dark engraved lines showing a mounted figure on horseback. Below these central images runs a wide band of classical relief sculpture featuring multiple human figures in detailed carved composition. The upper left corner bears the Maltese national coat of arms in colour—featuring a shield with vertical red and white sections and a crowned heraldic element above. “Banh Centrali ta’ Malta” appears across the top in burgundy lettering, with the denomination “20” positioned in the upper right. The lower left corner displays “Lm 20” in burgundy text, whilst “GHOXRIN LIRA” is positioned at the lower right. Fine guilloché background patterns in subtle peachy and pale blue tones provide security detail throughout.
