The 3 mils coin was a low-value denomination of Malta’s decimal mil coinage, in which one thousand mils equalled one Maltese lira. Struck in aluminium with a light, silvery appearance and a wavy, scalloped outline, it was a very light and thin coin that served the smallest everyday payments.

On the obverse, the name “MALTA” curves across the top around a honeybee resting on a honeycomb at the centre, with small seahorse ornaments in the side fields and the date inscribed at the foot. The scalloped rim frames the design in a petal-like border.

On the reverse, the large numeral “3” stands at the centre above the word “MILS”, surrounded by a wreath of vine and ivy leaves that follows the coin’s scalloped edge.
