5 Cents Malta (large type) (Issued 1986)

The 5 cent coin was part of the second decimal series of the Maltese Lira, introduced from 1986 while Malta used the Lira and its cents. Struck in cupro-nickel, it was a mid-range piece built to survive heavy circulation. The series remained in everyday use until Malta adopted the euro on 1 January 2008, after which the Lira coinage was withdrawn from circulation. It has a plain edge.

On the obverse, the coin carries the emblem of Malta used at the time — a shield showing a stylised Maltese coastal scene, with a traditional Maltese boat (dgħajsa) upon wavy lines of the sea beneath a rising sun, all enclosed within a border. The inscription “REPUBBLIKA TA’ MALTA” runs around the rim with the date 1986 at the foot, framed by a beaded border.

On the reverse appears a crab shown from above with its claws and legs spread across the field, with the numeral and denomination “5c” alongside and a beaded border within the raised rim.
