The 5 mils coin was the smallest denomination of Malta’s decimal system, in which 1,000 mils made up one Maltese lira. Struck in aluminium, it is extremely light and pale in colour, and it is instantly recognisable by its distinctive scalloped outline with a wavy, petal-like edge. Its very low value meant it saw heavy use before the mil denominations were eventually withdrawn.

On the obverse, the name “MALTA” curves across the top above an ornamental Maltese vessel, a decorative ewer or altar vase rendered in relief at the centre. Small stylised creatures sit to either side of the design, and the year appears at the foot, the whole following the scalloped shape of the coin.

On the reverse, a large numeral “5” fills the centre above the word “MILS”, framed by a wreath of trailing ivy leaves that follows the wavy outline around the inner edge.
