About Maltese Lira Exchange

The Maltese Lira (MTL) was the official currency of Malta until the country adopted the Euro in 2008, making all Maltese Lira banknotes and coins withdrawn from circulation. We accept all denominations of Maltese Lira banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current Maltese Lira Banknotes

As the Maltese Lira is no longer in circulation, there are no current-series banknotes — all notes are now withdrawn. The most commonly held notes by UK travellers and collectors tend to be from the 1994 series, such as the 20 Liri and 10 Liri notes. We accept all denominations across every series issued.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most high street exchanges, we accept the full range of withdrawn Maltese Lira banknotes, including earlier issues such as the 5 Liri note issued in 1967 and the 2 Liri note. Damaged notes are also considered, provided they remain at least 50% intact, though the rate offered may be slightly lower to reflect condition. If you’re unsure whether your notes qualify, we’d encourage you to send them in for assessment.

Maltese Lira Coins

We also buy Maltese Lira coins, which most banks and bureaux de change will refuse outright. Because coins require additional handling, the rate is typically a little lower than for banknotes, but it’s still well worth sending them in rather than leaving them in a drawer. If you also have leftover Euros from a Mediterranean trip, we can exchange those too.

Why Exchange With Us?

  • Competitive exchange rates updated daily
  • Accept coins and damaged notes that banks won’t take
  • We verify your currency and pay you within 5 working days

Maltese Lira Exchange FAQ

Can I still exchange Maltese Lira now that Malta uses the Euro?

Yes. Although Malta joined the eurozone in 2008 and the Lira has not been legal tender since, we continue to buy all withdrawn Maltese Lira banknotes and coins. The Bank of Malta no longer redeems Lira notes, so a specialist exchange service like ours is often the only practical option for UK holders.

I have a mix of 1994 and older Maltese Liri notes — do you accept both?

Yes, we accept notes from all series, including the 1994 issue and earlier designs such as the 1967 series. Older notes in good condition are assessed individually, and you will receive a quote before any exchange is confirmed.

Do you accept damaged Maltese Lira banknotes?

Yes, in most cases. We can exchange damaged Maltese Lira notes provided they are at least 50% intact. Notes that are heavily soiled, torn, or incomplete may be accepted at a slightly reduced rate — if you are uncertain, send them in and we will assess them for you.

What Maltese Lira coins do you accept, and will I get a good rate?

We accept Maltese Lira coins across all denominations, including Cents and Mils. Coin rates are a little lower than banknote rates due to the additional handling involved, but unlike most banks and post offices we will not simply turn them away.

How do I send my Maltese Lira to you and when will I be paid?

Simply box up your Maltese Lira banknotes and coins and post them to us yourself — many customers sending pre-Euro Mediterranean currency find the process very straightforward. Once we receive and verify your currency, payment is made within 5 working days via bank transfer or PayPal. If you’re not happy with our offer for any reason, we’ll return your currency to you free of charge.
