20 Centavos (Issued 1956)

The 20 centavos coin was a familiar piece of Mexican small change in the 1950s, struck in a bronze alloy that gave it a warm golden-brown colour and a solid, chunky feel. As a fractional denomination of the peso it circulated widely for everyday purchases, and its design celebrated the country’s ancient heritage. The coin is round with a plain edge.

On the obverse, the national coat of arms is shown at the centre, with the golden eagle standing on a cactus and grasping a serpent, surrounded by the legend “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS”.

On the reverse, the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan rises across the field with the twin volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl on the horizon behind it, and the site name “TEOTIHUACAN” is inscribed below. A large numeral “20” arches over the scene, framing a radiant Phrygian liberty cap at its centre, with the word “CENTAVOS” and the year “1956” beneath, and cacti to the sides.
