The 1 ban is the smallest coin of Moldova’s currency, the leu being divided into 100 bani. Struck in aluminium, it is very light and pale silvery in colour, and its minimal value means it is chiefly used in rounding out cash prices. The coin is thin with a plain edge and has carried the same national design since the currency was introduced in the early 1990s.

On the obverse, the coat of arms of Moldova is shown, with an eagle holding a Christian cross in its beak, a sceptre in one talon and an olive branch in the other. On its breast is a shield bearing an aurochs head with a star between the horns, a rose and a crescent. The legend “REPUBLICA MOLDOVA” curves around the design.

On the reverse, a large numeral “1” stands at the centre with the year split as “20” and “06” on either side, the word “BAN” below, and the mint’s stylised “M” monogram at the foot.
