The 1 leu was part of the first coinage of the Moldovan leu, which replaced the interim coupon currency in the early 1990s. Struck in aluminium, it is a very light, thin coin with a bright silvery-grey finish. The design is dated 1992, from the founding series of the modern leu, and it has a plain edge.

On the obverse, the coin carries the coat of arms of Moldova — an eagle bearing a cross in its beak and holding an olive branch and a sceptre, with a shield on its breast showing an aurochs head between a star, a rose and a crescent. The legend “REPUBLICA MOLDOVA” runs around the rim.

On the reverse, a large numeral “1” beside the word “LEU” fills the field, with the split date “19” and “92” to either side, a small national emblem above and a sprig of leaves below, within a raised rim.
