The 2 lei was introduced in 2018 as part of a new set of circulating leu coins brought in to replace low-value banknotes. Struck in nickel-plated steel, it has a bright silvery finish and a firm, modern feel. The coin has a plain edge and belongs to the current Moldovan coinage.
On the obverse appears a radiant sun with a leafy vine, the legend “REPUBLICA MOLDOVA” around the rim and a small national shield to the lower right, within a beaded border.
On the reverse, a large numeral “2” above the word “LEI” fills the field, with laurel and vine branches and the year 2018 below, all within a raised rim.
