The 5 bani coin is a low-value fractional piece of Moldova’s currency, with 100 bani to the leu. Struck in a light alloy with a pale silvery appearance, it is a small, thin coin used for everyday small change and price rounding. It has a plain edge and continues the national designs used consistently across Moldova’s circulating coinage.

On the obverse, the coat of arms of Moldova is shown, with the eagle bearing a cross in its beak, holding a sceptre and olive branch, and displaying on its breast the shield with the aurochs head, star, rose and crescent. The legend “REPUBLICA MOLDOVA” curves around the design, with a small sprig of oak leaves below.

On the reverse, a large numeral “5” stands at the centre above the word “BANI” and the year “2017”, with the mint’s “M” monogram beneath. Sprigs of oak leaves flank the design to left and right.
