5 Lei (Issued 1993)

The 5 lei coin was part of the first coinage issued by the Republic of Moldova after it introduced the leu in 1993. Struck in aluminium, it is light and pale silver-grey in appearance, and it represented one of the higher small-denomination coins of the early series. The coin is round with a plain edge and bears the distinctive early designs of the newly independent state.

On the obverse, the national coat of arms of Moldova appears, showing the eagle with a cross in its beak and a shield on its breast displaying the aurochs head with star, rose and crescent. The legend “REPUBLICA MOLDOVA” runs around the design.

On the reverse, a large numeral “5” fills much of the field above the word “LEI”. The mint’s “M” monogram sits to the left of the numeral and the year “1993” to the right, with the designer’s initials “C.D.” at the foot of the coin.
