About Moldovan Lei Exchange
The Moldovan Leu (MDL) is the official currency of the Republic of Moldova, a small landlocked country in Eastern Europe bordered by Romania and Ukraine. We accept all denominations of Moldovan Lei banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.
Current Moldovan Lei Banknotes
Moldova’s current banknotes are issued by the National Bank of Moldova and feature a range of denominations to suit everyday transactions. We accept all denominations across the full range, including the 500 Moldovan Leu note and the 1000 Moldovan Leu note, as well as smaller denominations right down to the 1 Leu. If you have returned from Moldova with a mixture of notes, we are happy to exchange them all in one go.
Old Series & Damaged Notes
Unlike most high street exchanges, we also accept older Moldovan Lei banknotes that are no longer in active circulation. Notes first issued in the early 1990s, such as the 200 Leu note first issued in 1992 and the 50 Leu note first issued in 1994, are all eligible. Damaged notes are accepted provided they remain at least 50% intact, though the rate applied may be slightly lower than for notes in good condition. Most UK banks will not handle Moldovan Lei at all, so we are often the only practical option for UK customers.
Moldovan Lei Coins
We accept Moldovan Lei coins, including the smaller bani denominations used in everyday change. As with most foreign coins, the exchange rate is slightly lower than for banknotes due to the additional handling involved. If you have a mix of coins and notes left over from your trip, simply send them together and we will process everything in one payment.
