1 Nepalese Rupee (Issued 1934)

The silver one rupee was the principal larger coin of the Kingdom of Nepal, struck in silver with a bright white lustre and a reeded edge. It carried the traditional religious and royal iconography of Nepal’s coinage, with all its legends rendered in Devanagari script, and served as a substantial unit of everyday and ceremonial value.

On the obverse, a square panel at the centre holds a circular medallion enclosing a trishul (trident), the emblem of Shiva. Devanagari royal legends fill the arms of the panel, with auspicious symbols such as the sun, moon and conch set in the corner fields, and the date in Devanagari numerals at the foot, all within a beaded border.

On the reverse, a central circular field contains a khadga (ceremonial sword or dagger) standing upright, flanked by curved floral sprays, with the Devanagari inscription for “one rupee” beneath. The design is surrounded by a decorative petalled border and a Devanagari legend running around the rim.
