The 5 rupees coin was a higher circulating denomination of the Kingdom of Nepal, struck in cupro-nickel with a silvery colour and a multi-sided, many-cornered outline. Its legends are rendered in Devanagari script, and it served as everyday currency during the reign of King Birendra.

On the obverse, a central circular field holds a khadga (upright ceremonial sword) flanked by curved grain or laurel sprays, with the Devanagari inscription for “five rupees” and the name “Nepal” beneath. A lotus-petal border encircles the design within the many-sided rim.

On the reverse, a square panel encloses a circular medallion containing a trishul (trident), with Devanagari royal legends filling the arms of the panel and small auspicious symbols in the corner fields. The Devanagari date appears at the foot, all framed by a beaded border.
