5 Paisa (Issued 1975)
The 5 paisa coin was a minor denomination of Nepal’s currency, the rupee being divided into 100 paisa. Struck in aluminium, it is very light and pale in colour, well suited to the large numbers of low-value coins needed for everyday trade. The coin is round with a plain edge and was issued during the reign of King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev.
On the obverse, the national emblem appears at the top, with a trishula (trident) rising above stylised Himalayan mountain peaks and flanked by the sun and a crescent moon. The country name “नेपाल” and the Vikram Samvat date sit at the centre, with the royal legend naming the King running around the rim in Devanagari script.
On the reverse, a standing cow is shown in profile, an animal of great cultural and religious significance in Nepal. Devanagari inscriptions appear above and below, giving an honorific title and the denomination in words.
