50 Paisa — Royal Crown and Swayambhunath (Issued 2003-2004)
The 50 Paisa is a withdrawn circulation coin of Nepal struck in 2003 to 2004. It is made of aluminium, making it very light at around 1.4 grams despite a diameter of 22.5 mm. Its round shape and low weight were typical of small fractional denominations, which were produced cheaply for minor everyday payments. It served as a subsidiary coin before being withdrawn from circulation.
The obverse features the Nepalese King’s crown. Below this are two Nepal flags crossed and two daggers crossed, encompassing the feet of the Almighty. The date is given in the Vikram Samvat era, corresponding to 2060 VS.
The reverse depicts the dome and tower of the Sri Swayambhunath Mahachaitya, a Buddhist temple, with a type of prayer bells shown below.
