100 Yuan Dollar (Issued 1911)

The founding of the Republic of China in 1911 marked one of the most transformative moments in modern East Asian history, ending over two millennia of imperial rule and ushering in a new republican era. The Taiwan Bank, as the note’s issuing authority, carried enormous symbolic weight for the population of Taiwan, representing fiscal stability and institutional continuity during a period of profound political change. The imagery and figures chosen for this currency reflected the ideals of the new republic, connecting everyday commerce to the nation’s founding vision. For those who held this note, it was not merely a medium of exchange but a tangible token of a society reordering itself around new principles of governance.

On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Sun Yat-sen, founding father of the Republic of China and revered statesman whose image became the defining symbol of republican Chinese currency. The portrait is rendered in detailed intaglio engraving, capturing his features with considerable precision against a lightly patterned oval surround. The overall colour of the note is a muted olive-grey, with the central denomination panel — an ornate guilloché cartouche in red and grey — prominently displaying the Chinese characters 壹佰圓, meaning “one hundred yuan.” At the upper centre, the issuing authority is inscribed in Chinese characters reading 臺灣銀行 (Bank of Taiwan), printed in a clear, formal typeface. The serial number L552748H appears twice across the upper portion of the note, printed in red. Vertical denomination readings of 壹百 appear in the left and right margins. Towards the lower right, a date inscription in Chinese reads 中華民國五十年, indicating the Republic of China year of issue. The border is composed of intricate geometric and guilloché patterning, with decorative rosette motifs in each corner, all rendered in the prevailing olive-grey tonal scheme. Two red seal stamps are visible in the lower portion of the note, adding further authentication marks consistent with Taiwan Bank issues of the period.

The reverse is printed in a warm brown tone throughout, presenting a bold central composition anchored by a large ornate lozenge-shaped guilloché frame enclosing the numeral “100” in a clean, prominent typeface. To the right of this central motif, a highly detailed engraved vignette depicts the Presidential Office Building in Taipei — a grand colonial-era structure characterised by its prominent central clock tower, symmetrical facades, arched windows, and formal forecourt, rendered with considerable architectural precision. The building’s engraving conveys depth and solidity, with fine line work distinguishing the stonework, roofline, and surrounding landscaping. The border treatment mirrors the front in its use of geometric guilloché patterning, and scrollwork details frame the upper and lower edges of the reverse. The paper itself shows light show-through from the front design, consistent with the thinner paper stock used in this early post-war Taiwanese issue.
