1,000 Yuan Dollar (Issued 1911)

Few banknotes in the Asia-Pacific region manage to combine civic symbolism with natural history as confidently as the New Taiwan Dollar 1,000 Yuan note, and currency specialists will immediately recognise it as one of the most visually layered issues in the Central Bank of the Republic of China’s modern printing programme. What commands attention first is the deliberate choice to anchor the obverse not in portraiture of a political figure but in a scene of childhood education — a design decision that speaks directly to Taiwan’s post-war emphasis on literacy and national development. The steel-blue and aquamarine colour palette, applied with considerable sophistication across both faces, gives the note a distinctive visual coherence that sets it apart from other high-denomination issues in the region. Engraving and offset printing work in close combination here, creating depth and fine tonal gradation that rewards close examination.

On the front, the dominant central vignette depicts a group of school-age children gathered around a terrestrial globe, rendered in a detailed intaglio-influenced photographic engraving style in blue-grey tones. The children appear engaged and animated, leaning in to study the globe together, a deliberate compositional choice that projects national aspiration through education. To the upper centre of the note, the Chinese characters 中華民國 and directly beneath them 中央銀行 — meaning the Central Bank of the Republic of China — appear in bold black typography set within a red-bordered rectangular cartouche, giving the issuing authority prominence. A red seal impression is visible to the right of the bank name text. The serial number EK677670YD appears twice in dark ink — once in the upper right corner and once in the upper left — printed in a clear, upright typeface. The large numeral denomination 1000 appears prominently in the lower left in bold blue numerals, while the traditional Chinese denomination 壹仟圓 is set in elegant vertical script to the lower right. A subtle guilloché-patterned rosette is visible to the left of the central vignette, rendered in pale tones against the light blue background. The phrase 中央印製廠, identifying the Central Engraving and Printing Plant, appears in small text near the lower centre. The overall ground of the note is a pale aquamarine wash with fine geometric background patterns that shift in density from the margins towards the centre, providing a security underprint against reproduction. A vertical security strip is embedded near the left edge, partially visible as a dark line running the full height of the note.

The reverse presents a sweeping landscape composition dominated by a high mountain peak rendered in blue-grey intaglio tones, widely understood to depict Yushan — also known as Jade Mountain — the highest peak in Taiwan and a powerful symbol of national identity. The sky behind the summit carries a warm gradient wash in soft orange and rose tones suggesting dawn or dusk, creating a dramatic tonal contrast against the cool blues of the mountain face and foreground. In the foreground of the vignette, two Mikado pheasants — the national bird of Taiwan, known in Chinese as 帝雉 — are depicted in detailed naturalistic engraving, standing amongst rocks and low ground vegetation. The birds are rendered with considerable precision: dark iridescent plumage, long barred tail feathers, and a slightly turned posture on the foreground bird give the composition a sense of quiet stillness. To the right, floral botanical elements — consistent with stylised plum blossom motifs — appear in pale ghost-print form within the right margin, adding further decorative layering. The denomination 1000 appears in large bold numerals to the upper left in deep blue ink, and the traditional Chinese 壹仟圓 is repeated in the lower right corner. A small circular plum blossom emblem, the national flower of the Republic of China, is printed in pale red to the right of centre. The text 中華民國八十八年版 — indicating this version was issued in the 88th year of the Republic, corresponding to 1999 — appears in small script along the lower left margin. The background of the reverse carries a continuation of the pale aquamarine and light blue tonal wash seen on the obverse, with fine guilloché patterning providing security depth across the entire surface.
