1 New Zealand Dollar (Issued 1976)

The round one dollar coin was a large cupro-nickel piece issued by New Zealand in the 1970s, before the introduction of the smaller modern dollar coin in 1991. Crown-sized and weighty, with a reeded edge, it was produced both for circulation and, in successive years, as a dated collectors’ issue. Its broad flan gave ample room for the royal portrait and national arms.

On the obverse, the coin carries Arnold Machin’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing a tiara. The legend “ELIZABETH II” runs down the left of the field and “NEW ZEALAND” down the right, with the year inscribed at the foot beneath the truncation of the bust.

On the reverse, the coat of arms of New Zealand is shown, with the quartered shield displaying the Southern Cross stars, sailing ships, a fleece, a sheaf of wheat and crossed hammers, surmounted by the Crown. Fern fronds curve up on either side and the words “ONE DOLLAR” are inscribed across the foot.
