Northern Irish Pounds Banknotes & Coins We Accept

About Northern Irish Pounds Exchange

The Northern Irish Pound (GBP) is the currency issued by authorised commercial banks in Northern Ireland, carrying the same face value as the pound sterling but featuring distinctive regional designs unique to each issuing bank. We accept all denominations of Northern Irish banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current Northern Irish Banknotes

Northern Ireland is unusual in that its banknotes are issued by several commercial banks — including Ulster Bank, Bank of Ireland, and Northern Bank (now Danske Bank) — rather than a single central authority. Each bank produces its own designs across a range of denominations, and all are legal tender at face value. Unlike most high street exchanges, we accept notes from every issuing bank, including higher-value notes such as the £100 Ulster Bank note and the £50 Bank of Ireland note, alongside all smaller denominations.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most high street exchanges, we accept older and withdrawn Northern Irish banknotes that banks in Great Britain will typically refuse. This includes historic issues such as the 1940 Bank of Ireland £1 note and the 1970 Northern Bank £50 note, as well as damaged notes from any issuing bank, provided they remain at least 50% intact. Rates on older and damaged notes may be slightly lower to account for their condition or withdrawn status.

Northern Irish Pounds Coins

Northern Ireland does not issue its own coins — coins used in Northern Ireland are standard UK Royal Mint coinage, identical to those used across Great Britain. If you have leftover UK coins alongside your Northern Irish banknotes, you may also wish to explore our British Pounds exchange page for further guidance. We also handle other regional sterling banknotes, including Scottish Pounds, which share some of the same multi-bank issuing characteristics.

Northern Irish Pound Exchange FAQ

Are Northern Irish banknotes accepted in England and Wales?

Technically, Northern Irish banknotes are not legal tender in England and Wales — they are ‘promissory notes’ backed by Bank of England reserves, but shops and businesses on the mainland are under no obligation to accept them. Many retailers in England refuse them simply due to unfamiliarity, which is why exchanging them with a specialist service is often the easiest option.

Which banks issue Northern Irish Pound banknotes?

Several authorised commercial banks issue banknotes in Northern Ireland, including Ulster Bank, Bank of Ireland, and Northern Bank (now operating as Danske Bank). First Trust Bank (formerly Allied Irish Banks) has also issued Northern Irish notes historically. We accept notes from all issuing banks, across all denominations.

Can I exchange very old Northern Irish banknotes, such as notes from the 1940s or 1960s?

Yes, we do accept older withdrawn Northern Irish banknotes, including historic issues such as the 1940 Bank of Ireland £10 note and the 1960 Bank of Ireland £10 note. Rates for older withdrawn notes may be slightly lower than for more recent issues, but we will always make you a clear offer before proceeding.

How do I send my Northern Irish banknotes to you and when will I be paid?

Simply box up your Northern Irish banknotes and post them to us yourself using a service of your choosing. Once we receive and verify your notes, we will pay you within 5 working days by bank transfer or PayPal. If for any reason you are not happy with our offer, we will return your banknotes free of charge.

Do you accept damaged or torn Northern Irish banknotes?

Yes — as long as a damaged note is at least 50% intact, we can assess it and make you an offer. The rate for damaged notes is slightly lower than for notes in good condition, but unlike many high street exchanges, we do not simply turn them away. If you are unsure whether a note qualifies, feel free to contact us before sending.
