1.000.000 Intis Sol (Issued 1990)

Peru’s Inti currency collapsed under the weight of one of the most severe hyperinflationary episodes in Latin American history, and the one-million Inti banknote — issued on 5 January 1990 — stands as the starkest possible testament to that collapse. Within months of this note’s release, the Inti itself would be swept away entirely, replaced by the nuevo sol at a conversion rate of one billion old intis to one new unit. The denomination printed here, unimaginable a decade earlier, had become necessary simply for everyday transactions. It is a document not merely of monetary policy failure but of an entire economy in the final throes of hyperinflationary crisis.

On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Hipólito Unanue, the celebrated Peruvian physician, statesman, and founding figure of Peruvian science, whose name appears in small text beneath the image to the lower right of the portrait. The portrait is rendered in a dark olive-green and brown intaglio style, occupying the right-hand portion of the note, and shows Unanue in period dress with a high collar and cravat, his expression composed and authoritative. The background behind the portrait features tightly ruled vertical line patterns in deep maroon and green, creating a rich textural contrast against the lighter central field. To the left of the portrait, the central vignette displays the Peruvian national coat of arms — showing the vicuña, the cinchona tree, and a cornucopia — rendered in green and red against a pale ground. The denomination “UN MILLON DE INTIS” is printed in bold, dark lettering across the central panel, with the issuing authority “BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERÚ” lettered prominently along the top edge. The serial number A5854655D appears twice — once vertically along the left edge and once horizontally along the lower right — printed in dark green. The date “5 DE ENERO DE 1990” is clearly printed in the lower left quadrant. Three signature lines are visible below the central vignette, labelled DIRECTOR, PRESIDENTE, and GERENTE GENERAL respectively. The overall background colour transitions from a pale rose pink on the left through soft green tones toward the right, with guilloché rosette patterning visible throughout the lighter areas of the design.

The reverse is dominated by a detailed architectural engraving of a grand neoclassical building identified by text above it as the Facultad de Medicina de San Fernando, one of Peru’s most historic medical faculties and an institution directly associated with Hipólito Unanue himself. The building is depicted in a rich purple-maroon intaglio engraving showing an elaborate façade with arched windows, ornate columns, cornices, and symmetrical wings, rendered with considerable fine-line detail. The issuing bank name “BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERÚ” runs along the top of the reverse in dark lettering. The denomination “UN MILLON DE INTIS” appears again in bold green lettering across a horizontal band below the central vignette, and the numeral “1000000” is repeated in large figures on both the upper left and lower right of the reverse. To the right of the building, a vertical decorative panel features geometric Andean-inspired patterning in purple and gold tones, incorporating repeating diamond and stepped motifs that reference pre-Columbian textile traditions. A circular ornamental device appears within this right-hand panel. The printer’s imprint of Thomas De La Rue and Company Limited is visible in small text along the lower edge of the reverse. The background throughout the reverse is rendered in pale lilac and soft pink tones with fine guilloché work providing security against reproduction.
