10.000 Intis Sol (Issued 1988)

Issued on 28 June 1988, this 10,000 Intis banknote was released during one of the most turbulent periods of Peruvian monetary history, as hyperinflation under the García administration eroded purchasing power at an extraordinary rate. The denomination itself — ten thousand Intis — reflects how rapidly the Inti currency, introduced only in 1985 to replace the sol at a rate of 1,000 to one, was itself being overwhelmed by inflationary pressure. The date printed on the note, 28 de Junio de 1988, corresponds to the anniversary of Peruvian independence preparations, lending the issue a degree of national symbolic weight even as the economy struggled. Within just a few years, the Inti would be replaced entirely by the nuevo sol in 1991.

On the front, the note is dominated by a large, finely engraved portrait positioned to the right of centre, depicting César Vallejo, the celebrated Peruvian poet born in Santiago de Chuco, rendered in a characteristic contemplative pose with his hand raised near his chin. The engraving is executed with considerable tonal depth, capturing fine details of his facial features and clothing against a pale blue-green background. To the left of the portrait sits the national coat of arms of Peru, an intricately detailed emblem surrounded by laurel branches, printed in orange and green tones. Above and to the left, a small rectangular security feature in green is visible within a decorative orange-bordered panel. The issuing authority is boldly stated at the top in black serif lettering: BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERÚ. Centrally, the denomination is printed in large, bold dark text reading DIEZ MIL INTIS, with the numeral 10000 appearing in teal numerals along the left vertical edge and in a larger format along the right-hand border. The serial number A 16426858 S appears twice — once vertically along the left margin and once horizontally at the lower right — printed in red. Three facsimile signatures appear beneath the central denomination text, labelled DIRECTOR, PRESIDENTE, and GERENTE GENERAL respectively. The overall colour palette of the front combines aquamarine, teal, pale green, and orange, with guilloché latticework patterns forming subtle background textures across the note.

The reverse presents a detailed architectural scene depicting a cobblestoned street in Santiago de Chuco, Vallejo’s birthplace in the highlands of La Libertad region, rendered in steel blue and grey engraving. Colonial-era buildings with wooden balconies and tiled roofs line the narrow street, with mountainous terrain visible in the background under a lightly shaded sky. The location is identified by the text SANTIAGO DE CHUCO printed in small dark lettering to the right of the central vignette. To the right of the scene, a small Pre-Columbian stylised owl or bird motif is printed in orange-brown, referencing Andean cultural heritage. On the far left of the reverse, a large circular decorative element in orange and teal features intricate geometric patterning reminiscent of traditional Peruvian textile or ceramic design. The issuing bank name BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERÚ is repeated in black serif lettering along the top of the reverse, and the denomination DIEZ MIL INTIS is printed in large bold dark blue lettering along the lower portion of the note. A small green security rectangle echoing the design on the front appears in the upper right area. The partial numeral 1000 is visible in teal along the left edge, consistent with the note’s denomination framing. The paper shows a pale cream-blue tone overall, with fine background guilloché work visible throughout.
