This ten-centavos coin belongs to the older Peruvian sol system, struck in a brass alloy that lends it a warm golden colour. A small, light circulating piece of the mid-twentieth century, it served as everyday small change and carries a plain edge. The old sol was long ago superseded, making pieces like this obsolete Peruvian currency.
On the obverse, a female personification of Liberty faces right, her hair bound with a laurel wreath, surrounded by the legend ‘REPÚBLICA PERUANA’ with the year 1955 below.
On the reverse, the large denomination ’10 CENTAVOS’ is set beside a slender leafy branch, with a dotted border framing the design within the raised rim.
