20 Céntimos (Issued 1994)

The 20 céntimos coin was part of the coinage introduced with Peru’s nuevo sol currency in the early 1990s, replacing the previous inflation-hit money. Struck in brass, it has a warm golden colour and a small, neat form, and it served as a fractional denomination with 100 céntimos to the sol. The coin has an irregular, gently polygonal outline and a plain edge.

On the obverse, the coat of arms of Peru appears at the centre within a wreath, its shield divided to show a vicuña, a cinchona tree and a cornucopia spilling coins, the whole set on a background of palm and laurel branches. The legend “BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERU” curves around the rim with the year “1994” at the foot.

On the reverse, a large numeral “20” dominates the field above the word “CENTIMOS”, flanked by stylised pre-Columbian figures and set above a band of geometric ornament in the Andean tradition, with a small mint mark below.
