The 50 céntimos coin belongs to the nuevo sol coinage introduced by Peru in the early 1990s, with 100 céntimos making up one sol. Struck in cupro-nickel, it has a bright silvery appearance and a firm, hard-wearing feel, and it circulated as a middle fractional denomination. The coin has a subtly polygonal outline and a plain edge.
