500.000 Intis Sol (Issued 1989)
Few banknotes encapsulate economic crisis as viscerally as Peru’s 500,000 Intis note of 1989, a denomination whose very existence signals the extraordinary hyperinflationary pressures that consumed the country during the late 1980s. A currency expert would immediately recognise the note as one of the highest denominations ever issued under the Inti system, which itself had replaced the Sol in 1985 in a failed attempt to stabilise the economy. The sheer scale of the figure — half a million monetary units — printed on a single note speaks to an economy under severe strain. Within just one year of this note’s issue date of 21 de Diciembre de 1989, the Inti itself would be withdrawn and replaced by the Nuevo Sol.
On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Miguel Grau Seminario, the celebrated Peruvian naval hero and Rear Admiral renowned for his conduct during the War of the Pacific. The portrait is rendered in a detailed intaglio style, showing Grau in civilian dress with a full moustache and circular-framed spectacles, positioned to the right of centre. The overall colour palette of the front is a combination of soft blue-green and violet tones, overlaid with intricate guilloché patterning that fills the background. To the upper left, the issuing authority is clearly printed in bold capital letters: “BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERÚ.” The denomination is stated in large numerals as “500000” in the upper left and repeated prominently along the right edge, while the written denomination “QUINIENTOS MIL INTIS” appears in bold text across the centre of the note. The serial number A12951 87K is printed in red to the lower left, and the date “21 DE DICIEMBRE DE 1989” is printed below the central text. Three signature lines are visible beneath the denomination text, labelled DIRECTOR, PRESIDENTE, and GERENTE GENERAL. A vertical security thread is embedded within the paper, visible as a dark line running through the note. To the upper left, a small rectangular panel contains a repeating geometric pattern in orange-red tones, and the Peruvian national coat of arms appears in the upper central area of the note.
The reverse is dominated by a finely detailed engraved illustration of the Iglesia de la Caridad, identified by the caption beneath the image which reads “IGLESIA DE LA CARIDAD SEDE DEL PRIMER CONGRESO NACIONAL.” The church is depicted with its characteristic twin bell towers and ornate colonial façade, flanked by street scenes including a tree to the left and adjoining buildings to the right, all rendered in blue-violet engraving against a lighter background. The issuing bank name “BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERÚ” runs across the top of the reverse in clear black typography. The denomination “500000” appears to the upper left and is repeated in large numerals to the lower right, while the written form “QUINIENTOS MIL INTIS” is printed in bold across the lower centre of the note. Decorative geometric border patterns in orange-red and pink frame the left and right edges of the reverse, complementing the guilloché work visible across the field. A faint watermark impression and subtle show-through from the front design are visible when the note is examined against light.
