5 Złotych (Issued 1971)

The 5 złotych coin was a widely circulating denomination of communist-era Poland, struck in aluminium and therefore very light and pale silver-grey in colour. Practical and cheap to produce, it saw heavy everyday use during the years of the Polish People’s Republic. The coin is round with a plain edge and bears the state emblem and a design celebrating labour.

On the obverse, the Polish eagle is shown with wings spread, in the uncrowned form used under the People’s Republic, surrounded by the legend “POLSKA RZECZPOSPOLITA LUDOWA” with the year “1971” at the foot between decorative dots.

On the reverse, a fisherman is depicted at work, standing and hauling in a laden net that hangs before him, a scene emblematic of the working people. A large denomination “5” with the abbreviation “ZŁ” appears to the right of the figure.
