This one-escudo coin is the reduced-module type of Portugal’s smallest common escudo denomination, part of a currency withdrawn on the country’s adoption of the euro in 2002. Struck in nickel-brass with a golden colour and a plain edge, it is a small, light everyday coin.

On the obverse, the Portuguese shield appears at the centre with its seven castles and five inner escutcheons, ringed by the inscription ‘REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA’ and the year 1982.

On the reverse, a bold numeral 1 sits above the word ‘ESCUDO’ in a plain field enclosed by the raised rim.
