This twenty-centavos coin is a small denomination of the old Portuguese escudo, worth one fifth of an escudo. Struck in a bronze, copper-toned alloy with a plain edge, it is a light circulating piece of a currency withdrawn when Portugal adopted the euro.
On the obverse, five quina shields are arranged in a cross in the manner of the Portuguese arms, encircled by the legend ‘REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA’ and the year.
On the reverse, the denomination ’20 CENTAVOS’ is displayed above a fruiting olive branch, with the designer’s signature in the field and a beaded border around the rim.
