200 Portuguese Escudos (Garcia de Orta, Issued 2000)

The 200 escudos coin was among the highest circulating denominations of the Portuguese Escudo in its closing years. It is a bimetallic piece, with a golden nickel-brass outer ring around a silvery inner disc, giving it a bold two-colour appearance and a firm, substantial weight. The reeded edge and clear markings made it simple to distinguish in everyday change.

On the obverse, the shield of Portugal is set at the centre of the inner disc, framed by the legend “REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA” around the ring. The large numeral “200” appears with the word “ESCUDOS” beneath it, and the date “2000” is inscribed along the foot.

On the reverse appears the sixteenth-century physician and naturalist Garcia de Orta, shown seated in profile examining a plant, with a book resting on his knee. His name “GARCIA DE ORTA” curves along the right, the word “ÍNDIA” appears at the left, and stylised waves and a laurel spray fill the outer ring, recalling his work in Portuguese India.
