The 5 escudos coin of the early 1930s was a silver piece of the Portuguese Republic, struck in a white alloy that gave it a bright, dignified appearance. As a substantial denomination of the escudo, it combined circulating use with a degree of intrinsic value, and it has a reeded edge. Its design pairs Portugal’s seafaring heritage with its national arms.

On the obverse, a Portuguese sailing ship, a caravel of the age of discovery, is shown under full sail riding across the waves. The legend “REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA” curves around the rim with the year “1932” at the foot, and the designers’ names appear in tiny lettering at the base of the scene.

On the reverse, the shield of the Portuguese arms, with its castles and the five small quinas shields, is set at the centre against a woven or banded background. The denomination “5$00” is inscribed across the foot, using the cifrão symbol to separate escudos from centavos.
