About Portuguese Escudos Exchange

The Portuguese Escudo (PTE) was the official currency of Portugal until it was replaced by the Euro in 2002, making all escudo banknotes and coins withdrawn from circulation. We accept all denominations of escudo banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current Portuguese Escudo Banknotes

As the escudo is no longer in circulation, there are no current-series banknotes — every escudo note you hold is a withdrawn issue. The Banco de Portugal officially ceased exchanging escudos, so if you have leftover notes from a trip to Portugal or inherited a collection, we are one of the few services that will still buy them from you. We accept all denominations, including higher-value notes such as the 10,000 escudos and the 5,000 escudos.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most high street exchanges, we accept escudo banknotes regardless of the year of issue, including earlier designs alongside later ones such as the 1,000 escudos (1992) and the 500 escudos (1987). Damaged or worn notes are also considered, provided they are at least 50% intact — though the rate offered may be slightly lower to reflect condition.

Portuguese Escudo Coins

Escudo coins — which came in a range of centavo and escudo denominations — are accepted, though the exchange rate is typically lower than for banknotes due to the additional handling involved. If you have a mixed collection of notes and coins, send them all together and we will assess each item individually.

Portuguese Escudo Exchange FAQ

When did Portugal stop using the escudo?

Portugal adopted the Euro as its official currency on 1 January 1999, with escudo banknotes and coins gradually withdrawn from circulation after euro notes and coins entered everyday use in January 2002. Since then, escudos have had no spending value in Portugal, making a specialist exchange service the only practical way to recover their worth.

Can I still exchange escudos at a bank or the post office?

No. Portuguese escudos are a long-withdrawn currency and UK banks and post offices will not accept them. The Banco de Portugal also closed its own escudo exchange programme. We specialise in exactly these kinds of withdrawn currencies — including other former eurozone notes such as Spanish Pesetas and Greek Drachmas — so we are well placed to help.

I have escudo notes from different years — do you accept them all?

Yes, we accept escudo banknotes across all years of issue, from earlier designs right through to the final series issued before the euro transition. Whether you hold a 2,000 escudos note from 1991 or a 500 escudos note from 2000, we will make you an offer.

Do you accept Portuguese escudo coins as well as banknotes?

Yes! We accept escudo coins alongside banknotes, which is something most exchange services will not do. The rate for coins is slightly lower than for notes due to handling costs, but it is still worth including any coins you have when you send your currency to us.

How do I send my escudos to you and when will I be paid?

Simply box up your escudo notes and coins and post them to us yourself — we recommend using a tracked or insured service for your own peace of mind. Once we receive and verify your currency, we will pay you within 5 working days by bank transfer or PayPal. If you are not happy with our offer, we will return your escudos to you free of charge.
