The 50 bani is the highest of the everyday bani denominations of the modern Romanian Leu, worth half a leu and a familiar piece of circulating change. Struck in a golden nickel-brass alloy, it has a bright, warm colour and a firm, solid feel, with clear markings that make it easy to tell apart from the smaller copper and brass pieces. The edge carries a lettered inscription for security.

On the obverse, the legend “ROMÂNIA” arcs across the top above the national coat of arms — the eagle bearing a shield, sceptre and other emblems — framed below by a ring of small stars, with the year “2012” set along the foot.
