About Romanian Old Lei Exchange
The Romanian Old Leu (ROL) was the currency of Romania prior to the 2005 redenomination, when it was replaced at a rate of 10,000 old lei to one new leu. We accept all denominations of Romanian old lei banknotes, including notes from different years and any that have seen better days.
Current Romanian Old Lei Banknotes
Although the Romanian old leu is no longer in circulation, the banknotes issued in the final years before redenomination — including high-value notes such as the 500,000 lei and 1,000,000 lei — are among the most commonly brought to us. We accept all denominations across the range, so whatever notes you have left over from a trip to Romania, we can help.
Old Series & Damaged Notes
Unlike most high street exchanges, we also buy earlier series Romanian old lei, including lower-denomination notes such as the 10,000 lei issued in 1999 and the 50,000 lei issued in 2000. Damaged or worn notes are accepted provided they remain at least 50% intact, though rates on heavily worn notes may be slightly lower. This is a fully withdrawn currency, so all Romanian old lei notes fall into this category — we assess each note individually and offer a fair rate.
Romanian Old Lei Coins
We do not currently have a dedicated exchange page for Romanian old lei coins, but if you have a collection of old lei coins alongside your banknotes, please get in touch and we will do our best to assist. Coin exchange rates are generally slightly lower than banknote rates due to the additional handling involved.
