About Romanian Old Lei Exchange

The Romanian Old Leu (ROL) was the currency of Romania prior to the 2005 redenomination, when it was replaced at a rate of 10,000 old lei to one new leu. We accept all denominations of Romanian old lei banknotes, including notes from different years and any that have seen better days.

Current Romanian Old Lei Banknotes

Although the Romanian old leu is no longer in circulation, the banknotes issued in the final years before redenomination — including high-value notes such as the 500,000 lei and 1,000,000 lei — are among the most commonly brought to us. We accept all denominations across the range, so whatever notes you have left over from a trip to Romania, we can help.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most high street exchanges, we also buy earlier series Romanian old lei, including lower-denomination notes such as the 10,000 lei issued in 1999 and the 50,000 lei issued in 2000. Damaged or worn notes are accepted provided they remain at least 50% intact, though rates on heavily worn notes may be slightly lower. This is a fully withdrawn currency, so all Romanian old lei notes fall into this category — we assess each note individually and offer a fair rate.

Romanian Old Lei Coins

We do not currently have a dedicated exchange page for Romanian old lei coins, but if you have a collection of old lei coins alongside your banknotes, please get in touch and we will do our best to assist. Coin exchange rates are generally slightly lower than banknote rates due to the additional handling involved.

Romanian Old Leu Exchange FAQ

What happened to the Romanian old leu — can I still exchange it?

Yes, absolutely. Romania redenominated its currency in 2005, replacing 10,000 old lei with 1 new leu. The old lei are no longer accepted in Romania itself, but we buy them here in the UK, converting them into British pounds at a competitive rate.

I have a 1,000,000 lei banknote from Romania — is it worth anything?

Yes, we do exchange the Romanian 1,000,000 lei note issued in 2003. While the face value sounds impressive, it is worth far less in today’s terms given the redenomination — but it is still exchangeable, and we will give you the best rate we can for it.

Do you accept damaged or torn Romanian old lei banknotes?

Yes, we accept damaged Romanian old lei notes as long as they are at least 50% intact. Unlike most high street exchanges or banks, we do not turn away worn or lightly torn notes, though the rate may be marginally lower for heavily damaged pieces.

How do I send my Romanian old lei to you, and how quickly will I be paid?

Simply box up your Romanian old lei banknotes and post them to us at your own arrangement. Once we receive them, we verify the currency and aim to pay you within 5 working days, either by bank transfer or PayPal. If you are not happy with our offer, we will return your notes free of charge — so there is no risk in trying.

Do you also exchange the current Romanian leu (RON)?

Yes — if you have current Romanian banknotes rather than the old pre-2005 series, you can exchange those too. Visit our Romanian lei exchange page for details on the current currency. If you are unsure which notes you have, the old lei typically feature much higher face values (thousands or hundreds of thousands) compared to the current leu.
