10 Kopecks — Saint George the Warrior (Issued 1997-2006)

This 10 Kopecks piece was a circulation coin of the Russian Rubles system, struck between 1997 and 2006. It was made of brass, giving it a warm golden appearance, and was a very small, light coin weighing 1.95 g with a diameter of 17.5 mm. Round in shape, it served as everyday small change in Russia for minor cash transactions before being withdrawn.

The obverse carries in the centre the relief image of Saint George the Warrior on horseback, killing a serpent with a spear. To the right below, under the front hoof of the horse, are the Cyrillic letters М (Moscow) or С-П (Saint Petersburg), indicating the mint-producer. Running along the rim from left to right is the inscription “БАНК РОССИИ” (BANK OF RUSSIA), divided by the figure of Saint George, and below the serpent appears the year of mintage.

The reverse shows, in the centre and a little to the right, the denomination: the figure 10 with the word “КОПЕЕК” (KOPECKS) written horizontally beneath it. At the bottom of the disc is a stylised vegetable ornament in the form of two branches.
