5 Kopecks — Saint George the Warrior, Copper-Nickel Clad Steel (Issued 1997-2026)

This 5 Kopecks piece is a current circulation coin of the Russian Rubles system, struck from 1997 onwards. It is made of copper-nickel clad steel, and is a small coin weighing 2.6 g with a diameter of 18.5 mm. Round in shape, it serves as everyday small change in Russia for minor cash transactions.

The obverse carries in the centre the relief image of Saint George the Warrior on horseback, killing a serpent with a spear. To the right below, under the front hoof of the horse, are the Cyrillic letters М (Moscow) or С-П (Saint Petersburg), indicating the mint-producer. Running along the rim from left to right is the inscription “БАНК РОССИИ” (BANK OF RUSSIA), divided by the figure of Saint George, and below the serpent appears the year of mintage.

The reverse shows, in the centre and a little to the right, the denomination: the figure 5 with the word “КОПЕЕК” (KOPECKS) beneath it. At the bottom of the disc is a stylised vegetable ornament in the form of two branches.
