This 5 Rubles coin was a circulation piece of the Russian Rubles system, struck between 2002 and 2009. It was made of copper-nickel clad copper, giving it a heavier, substantial feel, and weighed 6.45 g with a diameter of 25 mm. Round in shape, it was one of the larger everyday circulation coins in Russia before being withdrawn.

The obverse features in the centre the emblem of the Bank of Russia, the two-headed eagle with wings down, under which runs the semicircular inscription “БАНК РОССИИ” (BANK OF RUSSIA). To the right, under the eagle’s paw, is the mint trade mark. Along the rim at the top is the denomination “ПЯТЬ РУБЛЕЙ” (FIVE ROUBLES), and at the bottom of the coin are two horizontal lines divided by a dot, with the year of mintage beneath.

The reverse shows, in the centre and a little to the left, the denomination: the figure 5 with the word “РУБЛЕЙ” written horizontally beneath it. Below, along the rim and on the right part of the disc, is a stylised vegetable ornament in the form of a branch with two interwoven stems.
