10 Halalas (Saudi Arabia, AH1392 / 1972)

The 10 halalas was a low-value circulating coin of the Saudi Riyal, equal to two qirsh, struck during the reign of King Faisal bin Abdulaziz. Made of cupro-nickel with a bright silvery finish, it had a firm, hard-wearing feel and a reeded edge, and formed part of the decimal coinage in which one hundred halalas made a riyal.

On the obverse, the national emblem of Saudi Arabia is shown at the centre — a date palm rising above two crossed swords — with Arabic inscriptions around the field naming the ruler above and “the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia” below, and no human portrait.

On the reverse, the value appears as “10” and “١٠” in Western and Eastern-Arabic numerals to either side, with the Arabic words for “ten halalas” across the top. A central circular cartouche reads “two qirsh” in Arabic, and the Islamic (Hijri) date “١٣٩٢” is set at the foot.
