5 Halalas (Saudi Arabia, AH1392 / 1972)

The 5 halalas was a small circulating coin of the Saudi Riyal system, equal to one qirsh, issued during the reign of King Faisal bin Abdulaziz. Struck in cupro-nickel with a pale silvery tone, it had a light, sturdy feel and a reeded edge, and served for small everyday payments within the decimal coinage of one hundred halalas to the riyal.

On the obverse, the national emblem of Saudi Arabia appears at the centre — a date palm above two crossed swords. Arabic inscriptions curve around the field, naming the ruler above and “the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia” below, with no human image in keeping with tradition.

On the reverse, the value is shown as “5” in Western numerals to each side, with the Arabic words for “five halalas” across the top. A central circular cartouche reads “one qirsh” in Arabic, and the Islamic (Hijri) date “١٣٩٢” is set at the foot.
