50 Halalas (Saudi Arabia, AH1392 / 1972)

The 50 halalas was the highest of the halala coins of the Saudi Riyal, worth half a riyal, struck during the reign of King Faisal bin Abdulaziz. Made of cupro-nickel with a silvery finish, it had a firm, substantial feel and a reeded edge, and was a widely used piece of everyday change within the decimal coinage of one hundred halalas to the riyal.

On the obverse, the national emblem of Saudi Arabia is shown at the centre — a date palm rising above two crossed swords — surrounded by Arabic inscriptions naming the ruler above and “the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia” below, with no human portrait.

On the reverse, the value appears as “50” and “٥٠” to either side, with the Arabic words for “fifty halalas” across the top. A central circular cartouche reads “half riyal” in Arabic, and the Islamic (Hijri) date “١٣٩٢” is set at the foot.
