10 Srpskih Dinara Dinar (Issued 1941)
During 1941, a ten dinar note like this would have passed through the hands of Belgrade shopkeepers, farmers, factory workers, and postal clerks as the German occupation reshaped the economic landscape of occupied Serbia. A merchant might have accepted it as payment for bread or cloth, unaware that within months the currency would become a relic of a world about to be transformed by war. These notes circulated briefly before the establishment of the Srpska Narodna Banka’s occupation-era currency system, making each surviving example a tangible record of a pivotal moment in Serbian monetary history. The worn condition of surviving specimens reflects the intensive use they received during their short period of circulation.
On the front, the note displays a striking symmetrical design centred on a large heraldic emblem featuring a double-headed eagle enclosed within an ornate quatrefoil frame, executed in precise black line engraving. The denomination “10” appears in all four corners in serif typeface, with the full inscription “Десет Српских Динара” (Ten Serbian Dinars) rendered in Cyrillic script positioned to the right of the central emblem. The header reads “СРПСКА НАРОДНА БАНКА” (Srpska Narodna Banka) in bold capitals across the top, establishing the issuing authority. Below the main design, a serial number “C.0156” appears on the left side with the number “743” on the right, both printed in black. An ornamental guilloché border frames the entire note with intricate geometric patterns and scrollwork in the corners. The paper exhibits a cream to pale grey tone, with the engraving rendered entirely in black ink using fine parallel line work and cross-hatching techniques characteristic of interwar Central European banknote production. A handwritten signature appears beneath the eagle emblem, suggesting official authorisation. The lower portion contains small printed text in Cyrillic providing legal information regarding the note’s status and validity, with additional security instructions visible in the fine print band.
The reverse features a portrait of a young woman in traditional Serbian costume occupying the right half of the note, rendered in detailed black line engraving. She wears an ornate headdress with elaborate embroidered detailing and a decorative veil, her expression serene and forward-facing. The left side remains predominantly blank white space, allowing the portrait to command visual attention. The denomination “10” and full text “Десет Српских Динара” appear centrally and prominently, with “СРПСКА НАРОДНА БАНКА” repeating across the top in the same architectural lettering as the obverse. The corners again display the numeral “10” in serif type. The ornamental border continues the front design’s guilloché patterns, maintaining consistency across both sides. The paper surface shows visible aging with subtle yellowing and minor creasing from circulation. Fine Cyrillic text lines the lower portion, providing authorisation and technical specifications for the banknote. The entire reverse maintains the black-on-cream colour scheme with no additional colour printing visible.
